Betz Shines, DeLisi Opens Floodgates as 13U Hustlers Sweep
The 13U Frederick Hustlers locked horns with one of the better teams in the CRAB League in the opener on Sunday and neither team disappointed. Hunter King of the Rawlings High Heat and Steven Betz of the Hustlers were equally good tossing six innings of scoreless baseball. Betz limited the team from Anne Arundel County to three hits and struck out three. The Hustlers turned the scoreless game over to the bullpen in the final frame and the Heat scored a single run on a walk, double and single. The Hustlers showed incredible poise and fortitude in the bottom half of the final frame. Marshall Mott drew a leadoff walk before Gabe Torres hit a scorching grounder that turned into a 6-4-3 double play. With the Hustlers down to their final out and no one on, Tyler Prather drew a base on balls before Matt Cunningham hit a ground rule double that bounced over the fence in left center. The unlucky bounce prevented Prather from scoring but the Hustlers had runners on 2nd and 3rd with two outs. Nick DeLisi, who had drilled a double to left center earlier in the game, stepped to the plate and brought the home crowd to its feet. DeLisi unleashed a two run single up the middle for the walk-off win. Marshall Mott had the only other Hustler hit with a double to left in the fourth.
DeLisi’s big hit in the opener seemed to loosen up the home team in the nightcap even though the boys in black and gold gave credit to Cheetos and some special fans in attendance. In any case, after watching the Lake Shore Graysox stun the Rawlings ballclub in the middle game, the Hustlers came out on fire in the nightcap and scored six in the first and eight in the second against LakeShore. The rout was on as the Hustlers won 18-3 in a game shortened by the run rule. Dustin Isanogle singled on a line drive to right in the first before Brandon Bradshaw drove a monster two-run blast over the fence in straight away center for a two-run home run. The ball ended up one hopping the school building. DeLisi then tripled before Prather, Eric Ball, Austin May and Colby Patterson followed with singles. In all, the Hustlers recorded 17 hits with Bradshaw collecting four with two doubles and a home run. Ball ended up with three hits while Prather, May and Betz each had two. Bradshaw, DeLisi and Ball each pitched well for the Hustlers.
The Hustlers are back in action this weekend as they travel to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware for the Sports at the Beach Rally Cap Open.
The 13U Frederick Hustlers traditionally take the long Memorial Day weekend off to recharge and spend time with their families. By the look of their play Wednesday evening at Walkersville High School, they forgot to plug in their batteries. The young Hustlers continued their Jekyll and Hyde season with an uninspired 7-2 loss to a well-coached MMU squad. MMU turned a 1-1 game into a rout in the third when they scored six runs on six hits – three for extra bases. “Nick (DeLisi) was up in the zone and couldn’t throw an off-speed pitch for a strike but credit the MMU hitters – they took advantage,” said Coach Main. Marshall Mott tossed three innings of scoreless baseball for the Hustlers with four strikeouts. Offensively, the Hustlers never got anything going. The Hustlers only accounted for three hits and left the bases loaded on two occasions. Brandon Bradshaw, Matt Cunningham and Nick DeLisi each had a single. Tyler Prather and Gabe Torres continued to swing hot bats but had nothing to show as both had multiple line drives that found MMU fielders. Matt Kulikowski, Brendan Yegesh and Jack Surdez all threw well for MMU.
The Hustlers are back in action on Sunday at Yellow Springs. The Hustlers play the Rawlings High Heat at noon and the Lake Shore GraySox at 4:00pm.

13U Hustlers Squander Big Lead -- Split Saturday Round-Robin action
The Frederick Hustlers lost the opener 10-9 to PG Select and bounced back to defeat the HCYP Raiders 13-3 in the second game of round-robin action on Saturday in Upper Marlboro, MD. Nick DeLisi was impressive once again on the mound in the opener and staked the Hustlers to a 9-0 lead. DeLisi tossed one-hit baseball over three innings with two strikeouts. Luke Schlimm pitched a flawless fourth inning striking out the side. The Hustlers then did their best “Bad News Bears” impersonation. Five walks, four hit-batsmen, and three errors later, the Hustlers found themselves on the wrong side of the scoreboard when the game was called because of the one hour and 50 minute time limit. Colby Patterson reached base three times and scored twice. Austin May and DeLisi had run-scoring singles and Schlimm laced a two-run double to left. The Hustlers rebounded nicely in game two. Brandon Bradshaw worked two strong, scoreless innings. Ryan Bennett made his mound debut and was solid for three innings, giving up two unearned runs. Stephen Betz worked the final frame and gave up one run. Meanwhile, the Hustler bats got going early and got to the HCYP pitcher for six runs on seven hits in the first inning. Dustin Isanogle, Bradshaw, Tyler Prather, Matt Cunningham, Betz, DeLisi and Bennett all singled. Prather and Cunningham finished the game with two hits. One of Prather’s was a run-scoring double off the fence in left center.
The Hustlers play host to Mid-Maryland United on Wednesday at Yellow Springs. First pitch is scheduled for 6:00pm.
