The 12U Frederick Hustlers traveled up the PA Turnpike to the Steel City for the 2016 New Era Cap Classic and came away with a 4-2 record and a Top Eight finish in the 22 team tournament. The Hustlers got out of the gate fast with a 35-0 thrashing of the Burning River Baseball Club (OH) where they hit seven home runs. The Boys from Frederick followed that with a 7-6 win over a solid Pittsburgh Slider ball club (PA) before losing 12-11 to the Westmoreland Wolverines (PA). In that game, the Hustlers battled back from a 12-5 deficit in the bottom of the sixth and had the tying and winning runs on second and third when the game ended. The Hustlers played their best baseball of the tournament on Saturday when they beat a strong Detroit Bees (MI) squad 10-2 to end pool play and started seeded play with an impressive 13-3 win over the talented NY Muckdogs. As happens so many times in tournament play, the Hustlers were pitted once again against the Detroit Bees with a trip to the semifinal game on the line. The Bees were better this time around as they beat the Hustlers 11-3. The Detroit Bees ended up playing in the Championship game.
The Hustlers got strong pitching performances from Brandon Bradshaw, Nick DeLisi, Marshall Mott, Tyler Prather, Matt Cunningham and Andrew McElwain throughout the tournament. Offensively, the Hustlers found their groove and pounded 15 home runs – five each by Mott and Cunningham, two by DeLisi, and one a piece for Bradshaw, McElwain and Dustin Isanogle. The scrappy Isanogle who loves playing the game led the Hustlers in hitting with a .692 average (9-13), followed by Bradshaw (.688, 11-16), Mott (.647, 11-17), Cunningham (.529, 9-17), McElwain (.467, 7-15) and DeLisi (.438, 7-16).

The 12U Frederick Hustlers traveled down I270 Saturday night to beautiful Cabin John Park for a doubleheader against Bethesda Chevy-Chase. The black and gold ran their win streak to ten straight in the opener with a 5-1 win before seeing it snapped in the nightcap by a score of 4-0.
Nick DeLisi tossed four shutout innings in game one; DeLisi was magnificent allowing one BCC hit and fanning two. Brandon Bradshaw closed things out with two frames of solid relief. Meanwhile, the Hustler bats go going in the first as JT Sachar walked and scored on a Tyler Prather double. Bradshaw followed with a big triple to give the Hustlers a quick 2-0 lead. The Hustlers then turned to small ball to pick up a run in the 3rd and two more in the fifth. Prather led the way with two doubles, while Gabe Torres doubled, Matt Cunningham tripled, and Andrew McElwain singled.
Game two was a thriller even though the Hustlers came out on the wrong side. The game was a classic pitching duel as the Hustler’s Luke Schlimm and BCC’s Ethan Engel locked horns for six scoreless innings. BCC’s Engel was superb as he only allowed a JT Sachar single and Schlimm was equally impressive as he only allowed two BCC hits. The crafty, carefree lefthander struck out five and only walked two in giving his team a chance. Dustin Isanogle made a beautiful running grab in the bottom of the sixth on what looked like a certain extra base hit to send the game into extras. Two walks and an untimely error sandwiched between two scratch hits in the 7th made for a long ride back to Frederick for the Hustler faithful.
The Hustlers are back in action Thursday evening for their first game in the New Era Cap Classic in Pittsburgh, PA.
The 12U Frederick Hustlers continued their winning ways on Saturday, beating the Hickory Hornets 7-2 and the HCYP Raiders 7-6. Nick DeLisi worked four strong innings in game one and only allowed an earned run with four strikeouts. Brandon Bradshaw closed out the win with two scoreless innings. Tyler Prather, Gabe Torres and Matt Cunningham led the 11-hit attack with two hits each. A clutch, bases-loaded single from Torres followed by a huge Ryan Talbert double and Matt Cunningham single in the fifth broke open an otherwise close ball game. Bradshaw, Dustin Isanogle, Ryan Bennett and Jake Sherdel each added singles in the game.
The Hustlers jumped out to a 6-0 lead in game two before holding off a furious comeback by the HCYP Raiders. Luke Schlimm worked four flawless innings before tiring in the fifth. Bradshaw again came in and closed out the win. Gabe Torres kept the sizzling bat going in game two as he singled in a run in the first and homered in the third – a majestic bomb estimated at 320 feet. Ryan Talbert followed Torres’ shot with one of his own to give the Hustlers back-to-back jacks. Talbert also drove in what turned out to be the game winner in the bottom of the fifth with a single after Prather and Bradshaw led off the inning with hits. DeLisi, McElwain, and Schlimm also had singles.
The Hustlers are back in action on Saturday evening, June 18, for a doubleheader against Bethesda Chevy Chase at Cabin John Park, Field #2. The first pitch is scheduled for 5:30pm. The second game will be the first game this season for the Hustlers under the lights.
The Hustlers had their work cut out for them in the finale. Facing undoubtedly the best arm to date in the Delaware Diamond’s Jenkins, the Hustlers needed to be solid in all phases. Luke Schlimm took care of the pitching as the crafty lefthander was magnificent. After surrendering a leadoff double and two-out run scoring single in the top of the first, Schlimm was perfect. Mixing a live fastball with a filthy curve ball, the kid with the big smile held the Diamonds to two hits with seven strikeouts over the last five innings. Offensively, the Hustlers found a way. JT Sachar led off with a walk in the bottom of the first and Tyler Prather doubled to right center to knot the game at one a piece. The Hustlers added a run in the fourth on a key Nick DeLisi double and picked up an insurance run in the fifth when Talbert led off with a single, stole second, moved to third on a Cunningham sac and scored on an Isanogle single. The Hustlers took home the trophies with a great 4-1 team win.
The Hustlers beat an undermanned Severna Park team 17-2 in the first game on Sunday.
For the tournament, Cunningham and McElwain hit .555 (5/9), Prather hit .500 (5/10), DeLisi and Isanogle chipped in with .455 (5/11) and Torres and Talbert hit .400 (4/10).
The Frederick Hustlers made the trek across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge to Centreville, MD for the 2016 4th Annual Crab Claw Classic and came away with the #1 seed heading into Championship Sunday. The Hustlers beat the heat and the Game Time Baseball Club in game one by a score of 19-1. The Hustler bats showed life in pounding out 15 hits – six for extra bases – and Nick DeLisi (2 innnings), Brandon Bradshaw (1 inning), Tyler Prather (1 inning) and Matt Cunningham(1 inning) combined on a three-hitter. Andrew McElwain led the winners with three hits, while DeLisi, Bradshaw, Cunningham and Ryan Bennett each had two. DeLisi, Prather, McElwain and Jake Sherdel each doubled while Cunningham tripled and homered deep over the left center fence. Leadoff man JT Sachar and DeLisi each scored three runs.
Luke Schlimm (2 innings), Bradshaw (1 inning), Prather (1 inning), McElwain (1 inning) and Sherdel (1 inning) shared the pitching duties in game two against a solid Delaware Diamond squad and all were equally effective in an 8-3 win. The Hustlers scratched out eight hits – two by Gabe Torres and Dustin Isanogle. Prather hit a bomb to straight away center in the fourth and Torres and Isanogle each doubled when the Hustlers scored four runs. Prather scored three runs and Ryan Talbert and Isanogle scored two a piece.
The Hustlers earned the #1 seed in the ten team tournament and will play Severna Park at noon on Sunday.
