15U Hustlers Beat WHC Renegades 10-0
The Hustlers broke a scoreless tie in the 3rd inning with two unearned runs and then put a seven spot on the board in the 4th to take control. Mason Machak (Middletown) led off the 4th with an 11-pitch walk, Tommy McCarthy (Brunswick) played team baseball and laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt and the Hustlers were off and running. Jack Duffy (Urbana) blasted a triple over the centerfielder’s head, Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick) launched a one-hop triple off the right field fence, Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) and Alex Cartner (Middletown) followed with singles before Evan Pettyjohn (Boonsboro) unleashed his own triple to dead center. Itnyre finished with two hits.
The other huge story of the game was the crafty lefty for the Hustlers, Spencer Griffin (St. Johns Catholic Prep). Griffin got on top of hitters all night throwing a four-hitter with four strikeouts and no walks in the abbreviated five-inning game.

As has been the theme so often in this young season, the Hustlers struggled to get anything going offensively in game one and fell behind 4-2 heading into the final frame. That’s when jack Duffy (Urbana) led off with a scorching line drive single to left and beat the throw to second on a fielder’s choice by Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick). Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg) walked before Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) hit a deep sacrifice fly to center scoring Duffy. Alex Cartner (Middletown) sent an RBI missile to right center and Evan Pettyjohn (Boonsboro) followed with an RBI single to center. Before the inning was over the Hustlers scored four runs to account for the final score of 6-4. Cartner had two hits and Mason Machak (Middletown) doubled. Jordan Tapley (Smithsburg) got the win on the mound with 2 1/3 innings of hitless relief and three strikeouts. Noah Tucker (Tuscarora) worked 4 2/3 innings but struggled with his command and was the victim of poor defense. He only allowed 2 hits but walked seven and struck out five.
The bats showed up in game two to the tune of 15 hits and the Hustlers cruised to a 17-3 win. Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) tossed a solid four innings (1 ER, 0 BB, 4 Ks) before giving way to Tommy McCarthy (Brunswick) who pitched the final two innings. Alex Cartner (Middletown) led the way with four hits. Joey Schwartz (Smithsburg) and Parker each had three. Evan Pettyjohn (Smithsburg) was on base all five of his plate appearances with two hits, two walks and a hit by the pitch. Noah Tucker (Brunswick) had a double.

The Frederick Hustlers took both ends of the doubleheader against the Gambrills 16U squad by scores of 4-3 and 4-2. Solid pitching, great defense and timely hitting allowed the Hustlers to start 2-0.
The Hustlers grabbed a 4-3 win in the season opener behind the strong pitching of Noah Tucker (Tuscarora – 4IP, 3 H, 2 R, 6 Ks) and Jordan Tapley (Smithsburg – 3IP, 0 H, 1 R, 3 Ks). Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick) opened the inning with a double, Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson) was hit by the pitch and Alex Cartner (Middletown) lined a single to center plating Itnyre. With runners on first and second, Braden Thomson (Catoctin) laid down a perfect bunt single. The ball was thrown into right field, scoring two runs and Thomson ended up at third. Tommy McCarthy (Brunswick) drove in Thomson with a line drive single to right to conclude the scoring. The Hustlers finished with seven hits; Cartner and McCarthy had two each. Daniel Morrison pitched well for Gambrills.
Solid pitching continued in the second game of the doubleheader as the Hustlers scored late to take a 4-2 win. Vaughn Parker (Thomas Johnson – 7 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 5 Ks) pitched a masterpiece holding a very good Gambrills team to 2 hits. Parker walked the first hitter of the game only to see him score on a triple by Ben Moore. Gambrills tacked on one more run in the 6th to take a 2-0 lead. That’s when the Hustlers bats woke up. Jack Duffy (Urbana) beat out an infield single, Taylor Itnyre (Brunswick) lined a sharp single to left before Parker got the Hustlers on the board with a line drive single to left. Alex Cartner (Middletown) continued to swing a hot bat lining a single to right to tie things at 2-2 before Tommy McCarthy (Brunswick) delivered the big blow – a 2-run double to right center. Matt Binder took a no-hitter into the 6th for Gambrills.
